Why do I love film?

I could say it gets me to slow down, or how the natural warmth to film photography surpasses its digital counterpart, but the truth is, shooting in film reminds me of why my whole journey with photography started: because it’s fun! I feel joy with a camera in hand and eyes open to the world around me.

Though a lot of my film work doesn’t end up in my professional portfolio, these photos capture moments I never want to forget. They also serve as a sacred practice for retaining my passion for the art itself.

For anyone with the opportunity to pursue their creative work professionally, I believe it’s vital for the spirit behind your art to regularly enjoy making something for the sake of making it, whether you end up sharing it often or not. Looking back on these photos, I’m so glad I’ll always have these images to come back to — and whatever your medium, you just might love doing the same.

When I got some rolls of film back from Boutique Film Lab, I wanted to find a good place for them to live. Though sharing this collection is new for me… well, so is this blog endeavor! I’m excited to include them in my thoughts here, and I hope it can be an encouragement to anyone reading: celebrate your archives and the personal projects that help sustain your own bonkers creative journey.

In the batch of film below, you’ll find memories from my ‘22 Solo Road Trip. These photos were shot with various cameras and film stocks, so you’ll notice variety there.

That’s another thing to love about film: all the possible styles to explore depending on tools you use! As we begin 2023, I’ll keep exploring new cameras and film stocks, and I can’t wait to see what they make possible.

That’s all for now! Coming soon to the blog: a full recap of tour with Jake Wesley Rogers, upcoming 2023 projects, and more. Thanks so much for joining me on this update, and I’d love to hear what kind of practices or projects help to fuel your creative energy. Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time,

Jakob
